On Going Green

Peripheral Benefits of Taking the Paperless Plunge by Howard Buddin

“This post gets back to an issue that I addressed early on in my chronicling of writing a paperless dissertation. Namely, that many, if not most people I’ve encountered are dubious at best when presented with the idea of giving up stacks of scribbled upon, highlighted, and unsearchable journal articles and drafts.”

Writing Tips

How to Write Less Badly by Michael C. Munger

Most academics, including administrators, spend much of our time writing. But we aren’t as good at it as we should be. I have never understood why our trade values, but rarely teaches, nonfiction writing.”

The Writing Life

What I wish I knew before I started writing by Lady Scientist

“Since my entire life right now revolves around dissertating, it takes too much energy to write or think about anything else. Ergo, that is what I’m going to write about.  What I wish I knew before I started writing…”

Dissertation Digest # 5 by Miss LLA

“let’s call this day 2 of ‘so…how much progress could i make if…’.  i was thinking this morning (don’t be so surprised!) about what kind of progress could i make on my dissertation if i made a commitment to write at least 500 words per day through september 30th.”

Website of the Week

For all you academic fashionistas out there, I thought that I would share my latest find: acadmichic.  This blog is hosted by “A consortium of feminist academics, in the Midwest and Northeast, on a crusade against the ill-fitting polyester suit of academic yore.”  If you need a break from dissertation writing, then take a few minutes and check out the latest attire for trendy academics.

The TD:D blog carnival is published weekly on Thursdays.

The Dissertation Life

Three Books For Surviving Graduate School by Adam Ruben

“Graduate students need higher stipends, fewer questions from prying relatives about when they’ll graduate, and more department events with unguarded pastries. You might think the last things grad students need are more books. After all, if you’re in grad school, most of your time is already occupied researching and writing your dissertation — which, of course, is a thick book that no one will ever read.”

Dissertation Digest # 3 by Miss LLA

“until now, i’ve never really been very concerned with the number of words that i write in any given writing session or on any given day or period of days.  in fact, until today, i’ve been a little perplexed by those people who were concerned with the number of words they’d written.  but now i get it.”

A Dissertation in Pictures: Twitter Edition

After this week’s picture posts, some dissertation writers shared their own experiences through Twitter – see the links below:

evadiva72: “one part of my dissertation stats hanging in my office begging for analysis!”

badjahsensei: “100 articles and studies for mine, printed out, highlighted, and annotated.”

janeslaws: “love the photos – so have decided to add some of mine too 🙂 we’re in this together…” (also check out this one)

Website of the Week

I was incredibly excited this week to learn about Quilliant, a website that allows writers to form online writing groups and promote their work.  The website is still in its beta version, but you can check out a video of the site or take a tour.  Once the site is fully up and running, I would love to have a TD:D writers group, so stay tuned…
